In April 2010 the UK Government introduced a new Feed In Tariff Scheme (FITs) to encourage the take up of microgeneration technologies to help meet their carbon reduction targets. As a result if you install Solar PV on your property your utility company will now pay you for every kilowatt of electricity it generates.
As the scheme currently stands you are also automatically paid an extra sum of money for exporting 50% of electricity produced back to the national grid.
Once signed up to the scheme, you will receive quarterly TAX FREE payments which are INDEX LINKED for the next 25 YEARS. With an average annual return on investments of more than 8% it's currently better than any bank interest rate!
The scheme guarantees a minimum payment for all electricity generated by the system, as well as a separate payment for any electricity exported to the national grid. These payments are in on top of the savings made by using electricity which had been generated onsite.
Only systems installed by MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) accredited installers are eligible for Feed-in Tariffs. The MCS is an independent scheme that certificates microgeneration products under 50kW and installers in accordance with specific consistent standards.
The Sun's energy is converted into D.C. electricity by the solar panels and fed into the INVERTER which converts the electricity from D.C. to 230 volts A.C.
The electricity generated is recorded by the GENERATION METER, this is the figure you give to your utility company to claim your payments from the Feed-In Tariff scheme (FITs).
The electricity then flows into the consumer unit where it can be used within the property and any excess is fed back the NATIONAL GRID via your existing connection.
If you use more electricity than your panels generate it will be supplemented by electricity from the NATIONAL GRID. So you will always have enough power for your needs.
GENERATION PAYMENTS
For every kilowatt generated you will be paid at a rate which is based on the size of your system by your energy supplier.
The Government are likely to revise FIT's down on the 31st March 2012. However, all systems installed before this date will remain at the tariff given at the time of installation for 25 years, index linked and tax free.
EXPORT PAYMENTS
Until smart meters are rolled out across the country, it is automatically assumed that you will export 50% of what you generate back to the National Grid and for this you will be paid 3.1 pence per kilowatt exported.
E.G. 10 kilowatts of electricity generated you will receive (10 x your FIT rate) plus (5 x 3.1 pence).
ENERGY BILL SAVINGS
If you create your own electricity you also will make savings on your electricity bills by not buying as much from your energy provider.
The illustration below shows the potential value of the electricity generated by 30 degree pitch south facing PV system under the terms of the Feed-in Tariff (FIT) scheme.
| SYSTEM SIZE AND OUTPUT | |
| Installed system size (kilowatts/peak power) | 3.885 |
| Estimated annual system output in kilowatts (Gd) | 3238.54* |
| FIT INCOME | |
| Feed-In Tariff rate per kilowatt | £0.21 |
| Predicted annual Feed-In Tariff (Vf) | £680.09 |
| 25 year FIT income | £17,002.34 |
| BASIC PAYBACK CALCULATION | |
| Electricity generated consumed on premises (Cd) | 50.00% |
| Electricity generated and exported to grid (Ex) | 50.00% |
| Standard import tariff (It) taken from cheapest rate on customers bill | £0.12 |
| Proposed export tariff (Et) | £0.031 |
| Annual value of electricity consumed (Vc) Vc = Gd x Cd x It | £194.31 |
| Annual value of electricity exported (Ve) Ve = Gd x Ex x Et | £50.20 |
| Total value of electricity generated (Vt) Vt = Vf + Vc + Ve | £924.60 |
| Total value of energy produced of 25 year FiT period Not including inflationary rises | £23,115.00 |
*Output will vary depending on angle and orientation of panels.
