Grid tied inverters convert the electrical power generated by solar photovoltaic systems, wind turbine systems and hydro systems into a voltage that matches the local electrical grid. By using one of these any excess power produced is exported back to the grid for use elsewhere. The fitting of an export meter allows the owner to monitor the amount exported to the grid. Most utility companies have tariffs for the exporting of power to the grid which can then be offset against any power imported when the microgeneration system is not producing enough power for the household. In the UK all grid tied inverters must be G83 certified.
