These collectors have multiple evacuated glass tubes which heat up solar absorbers and, ultimately, solar working fluid (water or an antifreeze mix - most typically propylene glycol) in order to heat domestic hot water. The vacuum within the walls of the evacuated tubes act as giant thermos flask to reduce conducted heat losses. The internal surface of the tube is also coated with a reflective layer to help contain the suns rays which heat the contents of the heat pipe. The liquid in the heat pipe evaporates and rises to the manifold where it condenses back to a liquid after releasing it heat to the water flowing through the manifold. Evacuated tubes draw their energy from the available light rather than outside temperature and for these reasons can perform well in colder conditions.
