All pressurised systems require safety valves to allow the safe relief of any excess pressure. Indirect pressurised solat thermal systems are typically charged to 1-2 bar. As the temperature rises in the system the fluid expands and the pressure rises, this is usually absorbed by the expansion vessel. On extremely hot days the system may have fully heated the hotwater storage tank and the temperature difference controller will have turned off the circulation pump. The system is now in stagnation. During this period the pressure may rise to a dangerous level. The pressure relief valve will allow the system to lose this excess pressure without any dangerous or damaging repercussions. A system that frequently has discharge from the pressure relief valve has most likely been sized wrong during the design stage or has a faulty expansion vessel.
